Legendary British actress Prunella Scales, best known for her role as Sybil Fawlty in the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers, has passed away at the age of 93. Her sons, Samuel and Joseph, confirmed that she died peacefully at her home in London on October 27, 2025.
According to the family statement, she had been battling vascular dementia for several years but remained cheerful and witty until the end. The family revealed that she had been watching Fawlty Towers the day before she died — a poignant farewell for one of Britain’s most beloved comedy icons.

Born on June 22, 1932, in Sutton Abinger, Surrey, Prunella Scales built a remarkable career that spanned more than seven decades, covering stage, television, and film. After training at the Old Vic Theatre School, she made her television debut in 1952’s Pride and Prejudice and rose to fame with the 1960s sitcom Marriage Lines. However, her defining moment came with the role of Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers (1975–1979), where her sharp wit and unforgettable chemistry with John Cleese turned the show into one of Britain’s greatest comedies.
Beyond comedy, she earned acclaim for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution, which earned her a BAFTA nomination. In later years, she appeared alongside her husband, Timothy West, in Great Canal Journeys, a heartfelt travel documentary series that also showed her courageous journey with dementia. For her immense contribution to drama, she was honored as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1992.
Prunella Scales is survived by her two sons, Samuel West and Joseph West, as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was married to fellow actor Timothy West for 61 years until his death in November 2024. Her family described her as “a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose warmth and humor filled every room she entered.”
