Rabbi Alvin Kass, the longest-serving chaplain in the history of the New York City Police Department, has passed away at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by the NYPD on Wednesday, marking the end of a remarkable six-decade career devoted to faith, service, and the men and women in uniform.
Born in New York City, Kass graduated from Columbia University in 1957 and was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Before joining the NYPD, he served as a U.S. Air Force chaplain. In 1966, he became the youngest rabbi ever appointed to the department’s Chaplain Corps, eventually rising to the rank of Chief Chaplain — a position he held for nearly 60 years.
Throughout his career, Rabbi Kass provided spiritual guidance and emotional support to countless officers, often during moments of immense tragedy. He served under seven mayors and sixteen police commissioners, earning a reputation as a steady and compassionate presence during some of the city’s darkest days.
Kass was also a key spiritual figure in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, consoling families of fallen officers and offering prayers at Ground Zero. His words and actions during that period became a symbol of resilience for both the NYPD and the city as a whole.
Beyond his police service, Rabbi Kass led the East Midwood Jewish Center in Brooklyn for 36 years and taught philosophy and religion at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. His influence extended far beyond the force, touching generations of New Yorkers across faiths.
In a statement, NYPD officials called him “a pillar of strength and comfort to the entire department,” adding that “his unwavering faith and kindness guided thousands through their most difficult days.”
Funeral services for Rabbi Kass will be held at his longtime synagogue in Brooklyn, followed by interment in New Jersey.
I am deeply saddened to share the passing of Rabbi Alvin Kass, our Chief Chaplain, and one of the longest-serving members of the New York City Police Department.
