Rajagopala Chidambaram was born in 1936 in Madras, British India. He came from a Brahmin Hindu family; his father was C. Rajagopala and his mother was Ananthalakshmi Aiyar. He completed his schooling in Meerut and Chennai local schools. Excelling academically, he completed his B.Sc with honors in physics from Madras University in 1956 and earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the Indian Institute of Science.
Career
Chidambaram served as the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. He was also the director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India. He contributed significantly to India’s nuclear weapons program and was a member of the Commission of Eminent Persons. He received numerous awards, including the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan.
