Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has died at the age of 46. The ex-fighter, known to fans worldwide as “The Hitman,” was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on Sunday, September 14, 2025. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that his death is not being treated as suspicious.
Hatton was one of the most iconic British boxers of his generation. Turning professional in 1997, he quickly established himself as a fan favorite for his aggressive style, relentless body punches, and unwavering determination in the ring. Over the course of his career, he held multiple world titles in two weight divisions, including the WBA, IBF, IBO, and The Ring magazine light-welterweight belts, as well as the WBA welterweight title.
He became a national hero after his famous 2005 victory over Kostya Tszyu, which earned him the IBF light-welterweight championship in front of a roaring Manchester crowd. Hatton later tested himself against some of the sport’s all-time greats, including Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2009. Although he was defeated in both bouts, his courage and popularity remained undiminished, and his loyal supporters often traveled in the thousands to watch him fight abroad, turning Las Vegas into a sea of British flags.
By the time of his retirement, Hatton had compiled an impressive professional record of 45 wins, with 32 by knockout, and only 3 losses. Beyond the ring, he remained involved in boxing as a promoter and trainer, mentoring the next generation of fighters.
Hatton’s life outside the sport was marked by both triumphs and struggles. He was open about his battles with depression and addiction, earning respect for raising awareness about mental health issues in athletes. His candor helped break down stigmas and inspired many facing similar challenges.
Tributes have poured in from across the sporting world. Former champions, boxing organizations, and countless fans remembered him not only as a fierce competitor but also as a charismatic figure who embodied the spirit of British boxing.
Ricky Hatton is survived by his children and family, who have asked for privacy as they mourn the loss of their beloved father and son. His legacy, both inside and outside the ring, will remain etched in the history of the sport he loved.
