On the evening of July 28, 2025, Tamura drove across multiple states—departing Las Vegas, passing through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey, before entering Midtown Manhattan. He was armed with an AR‑style rifle and wearing a bullet‑resistant vest. Upon entering 345 Park Avenue around 6:30 p.m., he opened fire in the lobby and then rode an elevator to the 33rd floor, mistakenly ending up at the offices of Rudin Management instead of his intended target: NFL headquarters within the same tower complex.
Four civilians and an NYPD officer were killed; at least one other person was critically injured. Investigators described the shooter as acting alone. Law enforcement returned fire as Tamura ended his life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the third-floor offices.

Tamura had a documented history of mental health crises in Nevada, including two separate mental health holds (commonly called “5150 holds”) in 2022 and 2024. Authorities believe these episodes may have played a role in the attack.
A three-page handwritten note recovered from his wallet expressed anger toward the NFL, attributing his mental struggles to contact sports. He referenced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and asked investigators to “study my brain,” saying: “I’m sorry.” Investigators believe that, despite no confirmed diagnosis, his motive may have been tied to perceived brain trauma from playing football and contempt toward NFL policies.

In a media release on 9/26/2025 it was confirmed though a postmortem brain study that Shane Devon Tamura had definitive CTE pathology in his brain (Stage 1 of 4) at the time of his death, confirming his personal suspicion that he had the degenerative brain disease linked to repetitive head impacts from his participation in high school tackle football.
