Sharmistha Mukherjee, born on October 30, 1965, in West Bengal, is an Indian Kathak dancer, choreographer, and former politician. She is the daughter of Pranab Mukherjee, the 13th President of India, and Suvra Mukherjee. Her brother, Abhijit Mukherjee, served as a Member of Parliament from the Jangipur constituency in West Bengal.
Early Life and Education
Sharmistha grew up in Delhi and completed her schooling at St. Stephen’s College. She pursued a Post Graduate degree in Sociology. Her passion for Kathak began at the age of 12, and she trained under renowned gurus such as Pandit Durgalal, Vidushi Uma Sharma, and Rajendra Gangani. Her performances have been lauded for their grace and precision.
Dance Career
With over 30 years of experience, Sharmistha has performed Kathak in more than 40 countries, showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage. She has also worked as a choreographer, contributing to various dance productions and cultural events.
Political Involvement
In July 2014, Sharmistha joined the Indian National Congress (INC). She contested the Delhi Assembly elections in February 2015 from the Greater Kailash constituency but did not win. In 2019, she was appointed as a national spokesperson for the INC. However, in 2021, she announced her departure from active politics, stating she was the last member of her family to leave the party.
Personal Life
Sharmistha is unmarried and has expressed her desire to remain so. She resides in New Delhi and has authored a memoir titled Pranab, My Father: A Daughter Remembers, providing an intimate glimpse into her father’s life and their relationship.
