Graduating from Pasadena College (now Point Loma University) with a Bachelor of Arts in education, Shirley initially pursued a career in teaching within the Hudson and Arcadia Unified School Districts in California. Her commitment to education and family values laid the foundation for her future endeavors in ministry and advocacy.
In 1991, Shirley was appointed chairwoman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a position she held until 2016. Under her leadership, the organization saw a significant increase in participation, with 43,000 prayer gatherings occurring nationwide by 2015. Her efforts were instrumental in mobilizing Christians across the country to unite in prayer for the nation.
Beyond her leadership roles, Shirley co-authored several books with her husband, including Night Light and Night Light for Parents, which provided spiritual guidance and encouragement to families. She also authored Certain Peace in Uncertain Times, offering solace and faith-based perspectives during challenging periods.
Shirley and James Dobson were married in 1960 for 64 years and had two children, Danae and Ryan, who have continued their parents’ legacy in various capacities. The Dobson family remains dedicated to promoting traditional family values and Christian principles.
