Sir Terry Farrell, British architect best known for designing London’s iconic MI6 headquarters and shaping skylines across the world, has passed away at the age of 87. His death was confirmed on September 28, 2025.
Farrell Sarchitects announced his death news on Instagram and wrote, “It is with deep sadness that, on behalf of his family, the partners and practice of Farrells acknowledge the death of our founder, Sir Terry Farrell.”
Born in Cheshire in 1938, Farrell rose to prominence as one of the most influential figures in postmodern and high-tech architecture. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he left an indelible mark on Britain’s built environment, while also leading ambitious projects in Asia and beyond.
Among his most notable works is the SIS Building at Vauxhall Cross, home to the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, which became a modern landmark instantly recognizable from its appearances in James Bond films. His portfolio also includes Embankment Place above Charing Cross Station, the Home Office headquarters, and international projects such as KK100 in Shenzhen, China.
Farrell was admired for his bold, sometimes unconventional vision. He embraced urban design as much as individual buildings, advocating for cities to evolve with creativity while still respecting their heritage. He was knighted in 2001 for his services to architecture and urban planning.
Tributes have poured in from across the architectural world. Colleagues described him as a “nonconformist” and a “visionary who reshaped the way Britain thinks about its cities.”
Sir Terry Farrell is survived by his five children and wife and the global architectural legacy he leaves behind. His death marks the end of an era for British architecture, but his influence will continue to define cityscapes for generations to come.
