Perry Bamonte, the longtime guitarist and keyboardist of the legendary British band The Cure, has passed away at the age of 65. The band confirmed his death in an official statement, saying that he died peacefully at home over the Christmas period after a short illness. Members of The Cure described him as a deeply creative, intuitive, and gentle presence, expressing profound grief and extending condolences to his family, friends, and fans around the world. His death marks a significant loss for the alternative and gothic rock community.
“It is with enormous sadness that we confirm the death of our great friend and bandmate Perry Bamonte, who passed away after a short illness at home over Christmas,” the band wrote on their official website Thecure on Friday.
Bamonte’s journey with The Cure began behind the scenes in the mid-1980s, when he worked as a roadie and guitar technician for the band. In 1990, he officially became a full-time member following the departure of keyboardist Roger O’Donnell. Over the years, he contributed as a guitarist, keyboardist, and six-string bassist, playing a key role in shaping the band’s evolving sound.
He appeared on major studio albums including Wish, Wild Mood Swings, Bloodflowers, and The Cure, and performed hundreds of live shows worldwide. After leaving the band in 2005, he returned in 2022 as a touring member and was part of The Cure’s recent live performances. In 2019, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside the band, cementing his place in music history.
Perry Bamonte is survived by his family, who have requested privacy during this difficult time. He is remembered not only for his musicianship but also for his quiet dedication, artistic depth, and lasting contribution to one of the most influential bands in modern music.
