Travis Hunter Jr. (born May 18, 2003) is an American professional football player currently with the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL. He plays both wide receiver and cornerback, a rare combination in modern pro football. In 2024, he made history by winning the Heisman Trophy while also securing the Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player) and Fred Biletnikoff Award (best wide receiver) in the same season — making him the only player in college football history to win both Bednarik and Biletnikoff in one year.
Early Life & High School
- Travis Hunter was born in West Palm Beach, Florida on May 18, 2003.
- He attended Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia.
- In high school, he played both offense and defense — amassing 3,807 receiving yards on 263 catches (≈14.5 yards per catch) and defensively posting 114 tackles (102 solo) and 19 interceptions over his career.
- Coming out of high school, he was a five-star recruit and ranked among the very top overall athletes in the 2022 class.
- In a surprising move, Travis flipped a commitment from Florida State and chose Jackson State University, becoming one of the few top recruits to sign with an HBCU.
College Career
Jackson State (2022)
- At Jackson State under head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, Hunter contributed on both sides of the ball.
- His play helped amplify the spotlight on HBCU football and attracted national attention.
- After just one season, he decided to follow Deion Sanders (who had been hired by Colorado) and transfer to University of Colorado Boulder.
Colorado Buffaloes (2023–2024)
At Colorado, Hunter became a legend in a single season.
In 2024, his season was historic:
- Heisman Trophy winner.
- Chuck Bednarik Award (top defensive player) and Fred Biletnikoff Award (top receiver) in same year.
- AP College Football Player of the Year and Walter Camp Award among others.
- Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, First-team All-Big 12.
- Consensus or unanimous All-American status.
- Across defense and offense, he accumulated eye-popping numbers. For example, in 2024 he had 92 receptions, 1,152 yards, 14 touchdowns, while also contributing on defense with tackles, interceptions, and pass breakups.
- Over his college career (one year at Jackson State + two years at Colorado), he left his mark: total 153 receptions for 1,989 yards, 20 receiving touchdowns.
NFL Entry & Pro Outlook
- In the 2025 NFL Draft, Travis Hunter was selected 2nd overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- The Jaguars traded up aggressively to secure him.
- Even in the NFL, there is intrigue: can he maintain two-way status (i.e., play both wide receiver and cornerback)? Some reports suggest he may serve primarily as a wide receiver while contributing situationally on defense.
Personal Life
- His father, Travis Hunter Sr., faced legal issues in 2023 when he was arrested in Florida on drug and firearm charges. According to People and Sports Illustrated, he later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 90 days in jail followed by three years of probation.
- Hunter and Lenee announced their engagement in February 2024 and wrote on Instagram, “A million times, yes 💍.”
- They were married on May 24, 2025, at The Barn at Faith Farms in Tennessee.
