U.S. Representative Doug LaMalfa, the longtime Republican congressman from California’s 1st District, has died at the age of 65 after suffering a medical emergency at his home in Richvale, California. Emergency services were called Monday evening and he was taken to Enloe Hospital in Chico, where he died during emergency surgery, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and multiple news reports. His passing was confirmed by House Republican leaders and has further narrowed the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
LaMalfa was born July 2, 1960, in Oroville, California and was a fourth-generation rice farmer before entering politics. He began his public service in the California State Assembly in 2002, later serving in the California State Senate, and was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, taking office in January 2013. Over seven terms, he built a reputation as a staunch conservative and advocate for rural issues, serving on the House Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees and chairing the House Western Caucus.
