The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) was placed on lockdown Thursday evening, September 18, after unconfirmed reports of an armed individual on campus.
The university issued a shelter-in-place alert, urging students and staff to remain indoors while law enforcement conducted a thorough search of campus buildings. Police presence was significantly increased during the investigation.
At approximately 9:50 p.m., UNCW officials announced an “all clear,” confirming that no threat was found and the earlier reports of a gunman were unfounded.
The scare comes amid heightened tensions on campus following recent political controversies and the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Students have reported increased polarization, online threats, and heated disputes over memorials in recent weeks.

University officials have not disclosed the source of the initial report. It remains unclear whether the alert was triggered by a misunderstanding or a false tip.
“UNCW Alert! University Police have received unconfirmed reports of gunman on campus. UPD is investigating. Shelter in place at this time,” UNC Wilmington posted on X.
