Nicholas John Roske, now identifying as a transgender woman named Sophie Roske, is a California resident who attempted to assassinate U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in June 2022. At the time of the incident, Roske was 29 years old and lived in Simi Valley, California.
On June 8, 2022, Roske traveled from California to Maryland, carrying a suitcase containing a Glock-17 pistol, ammunition, a tactical knife, zip ties, a hammer, screwdriver, crowbar, duct tape, pepper spray, and stealth-modified boots. She arrived at Justice Kavanaugh’s residence around 1:05 a.m. and was observed by deputy U.S. marshals stationed outside the home. Upon seeing law enforcement, Roske walked past the residence and called 911, expressing suicidal thoughts and the intent to kill Kavanaugh. She was arrested without incident.
Roske cited her anger over the Supreme Court’s draft opinion suggesting the overturning of Roe v. Wade and concerns about potential changes to gun control laws following the Uvalde school shooting. She had researched Kavanaugh’s home address and those of other justices, contemplating the assassination of multiple justices to alter the Court’s ideological balance. Roske also sought information on methods to evade prosecution and considered fleeing to countries without U.S. extradition agreements.
In April 2025, Roske pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of a U.S. Supreme Court justice. Prosecutors have recommended a 30-year prison sentence, emphasizing the severity of the crime as an attack on the judiciary. Roske’s defense team is seeking a maximum sentence of 96 months, citing her mental health issues and voluntary surrender. Sentencing is scheduled for October 3, 2025.
In September 2025, Roske publicly identified as a transgender woman named Sophie. While her legal name remains unchanged, court documents and her defense attorneys now use female pronouns to refer to her. This development has been noted in media coverage and legal proceedings.
