John William “Jack” Carter (born July 3, 1947) is an American businessman, environmental advocate and politician. He is best known as the eldest son of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. John William “Jack” Carter was born on July 3, 1947, at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, during his father’s service in the U.S. Navy. Raised in Plains, Georgia, Jack worked in his family’s peanut warehouse as a child, earning 10 cents an hour.
He began his college education at Georgia Institute of Technology, later transferring to Emory University and Georgia Southwestern State University. After his military service, he returned to Georgia Tech, earning a degree in nuclear physics. Subsequently, he earned his Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1975.
Military Service
At the suggestion of his father, Jack enlisted in the United States Navy in April 1968. He served during the Vietnam War aboard the salvage ship USS Grapple (ARS-7). In 1970, he received a general discharge after an incident involving marijuana use among several classmates at the Naval Reactors Facility in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Career & Politics
Following his military service and legal education, Jack Carter pursued a career in business and finance. In 2006, he ran as a Democrat for the U.S. Senate in Nevada, winning the Democratic primary but losing the general election to incumbent Senator John Ensign.
Family & Personal Life
Jack’s first marriage was to Juliette “Judy” Langford in 1971, with whom he had two children: Jason James Carter (born 1975), a lawyer and politician, and Sarah Carter (born 1978). They divorced in 1989. In 1992, Jack married Elizabeth Sawyer Brasfield, who has two children from her previous marriage: John Chuldenko, a filmmaker, and Sarah Chuldenko, a book illustrator and painter.
