Kishore Kunal (10 August 1950 – 29 December 2024) was a respected Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from Bihar. A 1972-batch IPS officer of the Gujarat Cadre, he was widely admired for his integrity, discipline, and contributions to education and society. He also served as chairman of the Bihar State Board of Religious Trusts and founded Gyan Niketan School in Patna.
Early life
Acharya Kishore Kunal was born on August 10, 1950, in Baruraj village, Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, into a Bhumihar family. He completed his schooling at Baruraj High School and later graduated in History and Sanskrit from Patna University.
Career & Public Service
Kunal joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972, initially serving in the Gujarat cadre. He later switched to the Bihar cadre, where he held significant positions, including Superintendent of Police in Patna.
After retiring from the police service, he dedicated himself to social and religious causes. He became the Chairman of the Bihar State Board of Religious Trusts and played a pivotal role in the Mahavir Mandir Trust, which manages several hospitals and educational institutions in Bihar.
Gyan Niketan School
In the late 1980s, Kunal founded Gyan Niketan, a renowned school in Patna. The institution has since become a prominent educational establishment, competing with other prestigious schools in the city.
Family
Kunal was married to Anita Kunal, an educationist. They have a son, Saayan Kunal, born in 1996, who is involved in social service and entrepreneurship. Saayan is married to Shambhavi Choudhary, the daughter of Ashok Choudhary, a Bihar Cabinet Minister.
Passing & Legacy
Acharya Kishore Kunal passed away on December 29, 2024, due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 74.
In recognition of his contributions, a statue of Kunal was unveiled at the Mahavir Cancer Sansthan in Patna on June 12, 2025, coinciding with his 75th birth anniversary.

- Padma Shri (2025): Awarded posthumously for his exceptional service in civil administration.
- Bhagwan Mahavir Award (2008): For his contributions to community and social services.
