From 1954 to 1957, he played baseball at his local high school and on the Rikkyo University baseball team. In 1958, he joined the Japanese professional baseball team, Yomiuri Giants. From 1975 to 1980, he also worked as the manager of the Yomiuri Giants. He became the manager of the Japanese national team for the 2004 Athens Olympics, but he was hospitalized before due to a stroke. He again appeared in a baseball game at the Tokyo Dome in 2005.
He played around 11 times in the Japan Series championship. He worked two times as a manager in the Japan Series in 1994 and 2000. He received the Japan Professional Sports Grand Prize award in 1971.
