An 18-year-old cancer patient from Chicago has died just one day after reuniting with his parents in Mexico, following their detention by ICE while trying to reach him for a final goodbye.
Kevin Gonzalez, who had been fighting stage 4 colon cancer, passed away Sunday at his family’s home in Durango, Mexico. His death came only months after doctors diagnosed him with terminal cancer during a visit to Chicago over the holiday season.
According to his family, Kevin’s parents, who live in Mexico and had previously been deported from the United States, applied for emergency visas after learning about their son’s condition. Their request was denied.
Desperate to be by his side, they attempted to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally but were taken into custody by ICE in Arizona.
As Kevin’s health rapidly declined, he made the difficult decision to leave the University of Chicago Medical Center and travel to Mexico, hoping his parents would be released in time for one last reunion. A judge eventually ordered their release on Thursday, and they were deported back to Mexico the following day.
With assistance from Mexican consulate officials and emergency travel arrangements, Kevin’s parents finally arrived home in Durango on Saturday, where the emotional reunion took place. Tragically, Kevin died the very next day surrounded by his family.
His mother, Anabel Ramírez Amaya, said she wished she could have been there earlier to comfort her son during the hardest moment of his life. The story has drawn national attention, with U.S. Representative Delia Ramirez calling for greater compassion in immigration policies and promising to continue pushing for immigration reform in Kevin’s memory.
