His best-known role was as Sugar Colt in Spaghetti Western films. His full name was Jack Fillmore Betts, and he was born on April 11, 1929, in Jersey City, New Jersey, U.S. His family moved to Miami, Florida, when he was a 10-year-old boy. He graduated from Miami Senior High School and also studied theater arts at the University of Miami.
His career began with the play Richard III in 1953. He played the role of Mr. Fisher, an 80-year-old man, in One Life to Live in 1982. He appeared in the CBS drama series Perry Mason in various episodes.
He was also an author, having written Screen Test: Take One. He worked in around 108 films and television shows. He was known for Spider-Man (2002), Falling Down (1993), and 8MM (1999).
His nephew Dean Sullivan told The Hollywood Reporter, “He died Thursday in his sleep at home in Los Osos, California.”
His parents were John Stephen George Betts and Esther Maj Engstrom.
His last TV series was Good Trouble, released in 2019. He appeared in the Spider-Man film starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and Willem Dafoe, written by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, and David Koepp, and directed by Sam Raimi.
