A 42-year-old man identified as Kevin “Tugg” Watson was shot and killed Wednesday evening in Chicago’s South Austin neighborhood while livestreaming on Facebook, authorities confirmed.
The fatal incident occurred around 6:14 p.m. on August 13 in the 5000 block of West Madison Street. Watson, a longtime South Austin resident and father of a six-year-old boy, had been broadcasting from his parked car when another vehicle pulled up alongside. Moments later, he stepped out of his car and appeared startled before a single gunshot rang out.
Witnesses said Watson collapsed and struggled to breathe as bystanders called for help. He was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The livestream, which continued after the shooting, has since been viewed more than two million times, sparking outrage and grief across social media. Friends and relatives described Watson as a “family man” who lived just blocks from where he was killed.
“I said, I said, listen, bro, if they do come, let us park right here. You feel me? If they do come, come get me,” Watson says in the video. “We’ll move the car so they can get the space. We will move our car. Whatever car we need so they can get the space. Let’s get the park.”
“He was choking for breath,” said his cousin Jacquez Smith, who witnessed the aftermath. Close friend Alvin Jackson claimed Watson attempted to wrestle the gun away from the shooter, a person he may have known.
Police have not announced any arrests, and the investigation is ongoing. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
Watson’s death marks the second homicide on that Austin block this week, underscoring continued concerns over gun violence in the city.
