Daniel Naroditsky was born on November 9, 1995, in San Mateo, California, to Jewish immigrant parents — his father from Ukraine and his mother from Azerbaijan. He began playing chess at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of American youth chess.
In 2007, Naroditsky captured global attention by winning the Under-12 World Youth Chess Championship, establishing himself as one of the most promising young talents of his generation.
By 2013, at just 18, he had earned the Grandmaster title — the highest honor in chess — from the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
Beyond his success on the chessboard, Naroditsky became one of the most influential voices in modern chess education. Known affectionately online as “Danya,” he gained a massive following on YouTube and Twitch, where his live analysis, tutorials, and entertaining commentary helped introduce millions to the game.
He was celebrated for his ability to simplify complex strategies and for his calm, articulate teaching style. His instructional series such as “Speed Run” and “Climbing the Rating Ladder” became staples for chess enthusiasts worldwide.
“He was the teacher every chess player wanted,” said one tribute on Chess.com. “Daniel made the game feel alive and human.”
