Peter Cullen, the legendary Canadian voice actor best known for providing the iconic voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, has died at the age of 85.
Cullen died peacefully on August 26, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family. His death was confirmed by his agent, Kevin Motley.
Peter’s family tells TMZ … “Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family – and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide. His family asks that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember ‘be strong enough to be gentle.'”
Cullen’s distinctive voice made Optimus Prime one of the most recognizable characters in animation and popular culture. His family remembered him for his compassion, integrity and loyalty and asked fans to honor his legacy by carrying those values forward.
Peter Cullen began his professional career in Canadian radio and television before establishing himself as one of the most respected voice actors in the entertainment industry.
He first voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated series in 1984. He later returned to the role in numerous animated productions, video games and the live-action Transformers films beginning with the 2007 movie. His final theatrical appearance as Optimus Prime came in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023.
Cullen was also widely recognized as the voice of Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise. His other notable work included KARR in Knight Rider, King Kong-related vocal work in the 1976 film, and the distinctive creature vocalizations in Predator (1987).
His contributions to voice acting were recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
Peter Cullen is survived by his four children: Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.
Cullen leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning more than six decades. For millions of fans around the world, his powerful and compassionate voice will forever be associated with Optimus Prime, while his work as Eeyore and numerous other characters secured his place among the most memorable voice actors of his generation.
