Mick McNeil, a former England international and one of the respected figures in English football, has passed away at the age of 85. His death was confirmed by Ipswich Town Football Club.
Ipswich Town Football Club announced his death, “The club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former captain Mick McNeil. ”
Mick McNeil was born on 7 February 1940 in Middlesbrough, England. He began his professional football journey with Middlesbrough FC as a talented left-back. Known for his solid defending and strong leadership qualities, McNeil quickly became a key part of the team’s success in the early 1960s.
In the 1960–61 season, McNeil achieved a rare milestone by earning nine caps for the England national football team while still playing in the Second Division. This made him one of the few players in English football history to represent the national team outside the top tier — a testament to his exceptional talent and consistency.
In 1964, McNeil joined Ipswich Town FC, where he made more than 150 appearances and later became the club’s captain. Under his leadership, Ipswich won the Second Division title in the 1967–68 season and earned promotion to the First Division.
