Ben Saunders, the Dutch singer who became the first-ever winner of The Voice of Holland, has died at the age of 43. His death was reported on September 15, 2026, after a body was found at a recreational lake near Arnhem-Zuid in the Netherlands.
Marco Borsato wrote on Instagram, “Dear, special man, my heart is crying! I can’t find words for the emptiness you leave behind. Dear Janita, friends and family, lots of strength in processing this enormous loss.”
Saunders had been reported missing before his body was discovered. Police have reportedly ruled out a crime in connection with his death.
Born in London in 1983, Ben Saunders moved to the Netherlands as a child. Before achieving national fame as a singer, he worked as a tattoo artist and became known by the nickname “Tattoo Ben.”
Saunders rose to prominence in 2010 when he competed in the first season of The Voice of Holland. He was coached by Roel van Velzen and went on to win the competition’s inaugural season in January 2011.
Following his victory, Saunders released music that performed strongly in the Dutch charts. His debut album, You Thought You Knew Me By Now, reached No. 1 in the Netherlands, while songs including “Kill For a Broken Heart” also reached the top of the Dutch charts.
He had also performed with his brother Dean Saunders as part of the group Follow That Dream before pursuing his solo career.
Ben Saunders is survived by family members, including his brother Dean Saunders.
