Varun Dhawan’s 2024 action thriller Baby John, directed by Atlee, was one of the most anticipated films of the year. Released on December 25, 2024, the film was a remake of the Tamil blockbuster Theri and featured Dhawan in a never-before-seen action avatar. Despite the hype and a massive promotional campaign, Baby John has been labeled a major box office disappointment.
Baby John was produced on a substantial budget of ₹160 crore, making it one of the most expensive films in Dhawan’s career. The actor reportedly took home ₹25 crore for his role . However, the film’s box office performance has been underwhelming.
On its opening day, Baby John earned approximately ₹11.25 crore domestically. Despite the Christmas holiday boost and competition from other major releases, the film struggled to gain momentum. By its eighth day, the film had grossed just ₹35 crore in India and ₹47 crore worldwide, falling significantly short of its production costs.
Critics have been largely critical of the film, citing its over-the-top action sequences and incoherent storytelling. While Dhawan’s performance received some praise, the film’s overall execution failed to resonate with audiences.
