Bob McNeil (1942 – 30 December 2024) was a respected New Zealand journalist and broadcaster, best known for his long career with TV3. His work in television, radio, and print earned him recognition as one of New Zealand’s notable media figures.
Early Life and Education
Bob McNeil was born in 1942 in Wellington, New Zealand. He spent his early years in various regions, including Otago, Taranaki, and Hawke’s Bay. He attended Palmerston North Teachers’ College in 1961–1962 and began his professional life as a teacher, working in Taranaki before moving overseas to teach in London.
Career
McNeil started in journalism with the Taranaki Daily News and later worked in radio, including Radio Waikato and 1ZB. In 1989, he joined TV3 as one of its founding reporters. Over two decades, he covered major events in New Zealand and internationally, known for his thorough reporting and empathetic storytelling.
In 2014, he published his memoir, News Travels, sharing experiences from his journalism career. He retired from broadcasting in 2010.
Family
Bob McNeil married Jeanette in 1969, and they had three children. Their daughter, Sacha McNeil, is also a journalist and news presenter in New Zealand and has often spoken about her father’s influence on her career.
Death
Bob McNeil passed away on 30 December 2024 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, aged 82. Tributes highlighted his kindness, humor, and the lasting impact he had on colleagues and the journalism community.
