He worked 10 years as a newspaper photojournalist and 30 years as a contract photographer for the National Geographic Society. In 2006, he received honorary degree by The University of Minnesota. He was a Hasselblad Master in 2002. He represented 40 most important nature photographs. He worked with 25 photographers in his career including Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Eliot Porter.
