Doug Lebda, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of LendingTree, has tragically died at the age of 55 following an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident on his family farm in Polk County, North Carolina.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 12, 2025. Doug Lebda died in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident on his property in North Carolina. Investigators at the scene reported no signs of foul play.
Businessman and former Governor of North Carolina Pat McCrory wrote on X, “I have lost a true friend and North Carolina has lost one of America’s greatest entrepreneurs. Doug Lebda could have put the head quarters of Lending Tree anywhere in the nation, but he selected Charlotte to be his home. We are so fortunate to have known his passion and heart.”
The company’s Board of Directors issued a statement on Monday morning:
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Doug. Doug was a visionary leader whose relentless drive, innovation and passion transformed the financial services landscape, touching the lives of millions of consumers. Since founding LendingTree in 1996, Doug dedicated himself to building a company rooted in consumer empowerment, championing a mission to simplify financial decisions and fostering economic opportunity for all.
Doug’s unwavering commitment to our team, customers and partners shaped LendingTree’s culture and values and permanently changed the way in which consumers access financial products. His passion will continue to inspire us as we move forward together. We extend our deepest sympathies to Doug’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
The Board will work closely with Scott and the leadership team to honor Doug’s vision. We are committed to upholding his legacy and continuing the work he began with passion, integrity and dedication.”
Following his passing, Scott Peyree, the company’s Chief Operating Officer and President, has been appointed as Interim CEO, while Steve Ozonian will assume the role of Chairman of the Board.
Lebda founded LendingTree in 1996 after struggling to secure a mortgage for his first home. His frustration with the traditional loan process led him to create an online marketplace where borrowers could compare offers from multiple lenders — a model that forever changed consumer finance in the United States.
Under his leadership, LendingTree became a publicly traded company (NASDAQ: TREE) and expanded its reach into personal loans, credit cards, insurance, and more.
Beyond LendingTree, Lebda co-founded Tykoon, a platform designed to teach children and families about financial literacy. He was also known for mentoring young entrepreneurs and investing in fintech startups.
Doug Lebda is survived by his wife, Megan Lebda, and their three daughters: Rachel, Abby and Sophia.
His wife Megan Lebda joined LendingTree in 2010. Megan served as Marketing Coordinator and Marketing and Communications Manager for LendingTree.
Currently, she is a Director of Public Relations and Communications at LendingTree.
