Former VFL footballer Kevin Ablett, a respected member of one of Australian football’s most iconic families, has passed away at the age of 67.
Drouin Football and Netball Clubs announced his death on Tuesday, 14 August 2025 on Facebook, “The Drouin Football and Netball Club would like to acknowledge the recent passing of Kevin Ablett.”
“Kevin, a past Drouin Footballer and Coach was a great family man and was well regarded in the local community.”
“He grew up playing junior football for the Drouin FC and was apart of multiple premiership sides.”
“Kevin would go on to play a total of 38 Senior Games of VFL with Hawthorn, Richmond and Geelong. He was a pacey and skillful footballer playing often on a half back flank or wing.”
“Kevin returned to local football post his VFL career with Coaching stints at Lang Lang FC and back at Drouin FC as a non playing coach in 1999.”
“Kevin has lived locally and raised a fine family in the Drouin region. Our heartfelt condolences are with Deb, the Kids and the extended Ablett Family.

Kevin Ablett began his professional football career with Hawthorn in 1977, before going on to play with Richmond and Geelong over the following years.
Across his VFL career, he played 38 senior games between 1977 and 1985, earning a reputation as a hardworking and reliable team player.
Kevin was part of the renowned Ablett family, a dynasty that has left an indelible mark on Australian Rules Football.
He was the brother of Geoff Ablett and Gary Ablett Sr., and the uncle of Gary Ablett Jr. and Nathan Ablett — names synonymous with excellence in the AFL.
His son, Luke Ablett, continued the family legacy, playing for the Sydney Swans and becoming a 2005 AFL Premiership player.
