Known affectionately as “Iron Mike” and “Da Coach,” Ditka became one of the most recognizable figures in professional American football. His death marks the loss of a sports icon whose career as both a player and coach helped shape NFL history.
Mike Greenberg wrote on Facebook, “I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of Mike Ditka. There is no figure in my career or my life who looms larger, he was truly larger than life and that will never change. Rest in peace Iron Mike, thank you for absolutely everything.”
Mike Ditka was born on October 18, 1939, in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. He played college football at the University of Pittsburgh before being selected by the Chicago Bears with the fifth overall pick in the 1961 NFL Draft.
As a tight end, Ditka played for the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, and Dallas Cowboys. He won the NFL Rookie of the Year award in 1961 and became the first tight end in NFL history to record more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988.
After retiring as a player, Ditka began a successful coaching career. He became head coach of the Chicago Bears in 1982 and led the team to a memorable Super Bowl XX victory following the 1985 season. The Bears defeated the New England Patriots 46–10, securing one of the most celebrated championships in franchise history.
Ditka also coached the New Orleans Saints and later worked as a television football analyst. His influence extended beyond the field, making him a lasting figure in American sports culture.
