M.T. Vasudevan Nair, an iconic figure in Malayalam literature and cinema, passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 91. He breathed his last at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode, where he had been undergoing treatment following a cardiac arrest earlier that month.
Born on July 15, 1933, in Kudallur, Kerala, M.T. was drawn to storytelling from a young age. He completed his graduation in Chemistry, during which he began crafting short stories. At just 20, he won a prize for the best short story in Malayalam, marking the beginning of his illustrious literary career.
M.T.’s influence extended beyond literature into cinema. His screenplays for films like Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha and Naranathu Thampuran are considered masterpieces, blending rich narratives with profound character studies. His work earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story and Screenplay multiple times.
Throughout his career, M.T. received numerous accolades, including the Jnanpith Award in 1995, the Padma Bhushan in 2005, National Film Awards for Best Screenplay four times, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958, Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 1970, Vayalar Award in 1984, and the JC Daniel Award in 2013 for overall contributions to Malayalam cinema.
M.T. married twice. His first wife, Prameela, was a writer and translator; they married in 1965 and separated in 1976. From this union, he had a daughter, Sithara, who resides in the United States. In 1977, he married Kalamandalam Saraswathi, a renowned classical dancer from Kerala. They had a daughter, Aswathy Nair, who is also a professional dancer.
