Hollywood icon Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning actress known for her unforgettable performances in Annie Hall, The Godfather, and Something’s Gotta Give, has passed away at the age of 79.

American actress and comedian Bette Midler wrote on Instagram, “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!”
Musician Rita Wilson honored Diane Keaton’s legacy and wrote about it on Instagram, “Diane Keaton has passed away. What is that term? A polite way of saying what we don’t want to acknowledge. The finality. Every time I met Diane she was laughing, smiling, creating, observing, reflecting. Her work as an artist is simply outstanding.”
“She could do it all. Just watch The Godfather films and then Annie Hall. I remember being mesmerized seeing her on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show singing in the most vulnerable way. But so pure and so honest.”
“Her attention to detail and design was extraordinary. And her efforts to preserve architecturally significant houses and buildings was deeply appreciated. She knew craftsmanship.”
“She was a craftsman. Weaving threads of gorgeous performances into our hearts. Even the song playing, First Christmas, Diane wrote with @jonasmyrin and @carolebayersager and performed recently. Diane was determined to be a mom and did so, on her own, bringing Dexter and Duke into the world becoming their mother.”
” It’s so hard to lose someone who inspired us, for many reasons, and yet, so grateful her beauty and artistry will live on. We will miss you Diane. My prayers are with Diane’s loved ones and her children. May her memory be eternal.”
Michael Douglas paid tribute to Diane Keaton on Instagram, calling her “one of the greatest icons in our industry.” He shared heartfelt memories of working with her on the film And So It Goes nearly twelve years ago and extended his deepest condolences to the Keaton family during this difficult time.
Actress Melissa Gilbert expressed deep sorrow over Diane Keaton’s passing on Instagram, calling it “unreal” that someone so vital and vibrant is gone.
Gilbert reflected on Keaton’s extraordinary career and enduring influence, writing that she will live on through her remarkable body of work and her beloved children. She shared a personal anecdote about meeting Keaton once at age seventeen, explaining how she had long admired her as an idol but kept it to herself to avoid embarrassment.
“Her versatility as an actor, her style, independence, humor, and smile—everything about her was inspiring,” Gilbert wrote. She added that while there are many questions she wishes she could ask Keaton, she will instead honor her memory, closing with a heartfelt farewell: “Good night sweet woman. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest,” she add.
In her last Instagram’s post, she wrote, “LETS HELP THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST IN OUR CITY OF ANGELS!”

Diane Keaton never married. Instead, she devoted her life to her craft and to her two adopted children — Dexter, born in 1995, and Duke, born in 2000.
