Former Australian tennis champion Mal Anderson has passed away at the age of 91. Tennis Australia confirmed his death on May 11, 2026. Anderson was one of Australia’s greatest tennis players of the 1950s and became the first unseeded player to win the U.S.
Craig Gabriel wrote on X, “I am incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Aussie great Mal Anderson. One of tennis’ legends. Mal was 91. Before his passing he was the 3rd oldest major champion after Frank Sedgeman & Ken Rosewall. During this year’s Brisbane he was often sitting with Ken to watch matches.”
Mal Anderson was one of Australia’s most respected tennis champions during the 1950s and 1960s. His biggest career achievement came in 1957 when he won the U.S.
Championships, becoming the first unseeded player in history to claim the title. Anderson was also a dominant doubles player, winning the Australian Championships doubles title in 1956 and several mixed doubles Grand Slam trophies.
He played a major role in Australia’s Davis Cup success and was known for his powerful serve-and-volley style during the amateur tennis era. In 1972, long after many believed his prime had passed, Anderson made an inspiring comeback by reaching the Australian Open final at the age of 36, proving his longevity and determination in professional tennis.
His brother-in-law Roy Stanley Emerson is also a Australian tennis star. When Mal Anderson was eight year old, he started playing tennis.
