Bernie Parent, the legendary Philadelphia Flyers goaltender, has passed away at the age of 80. He died peacefully in his sleep after struggling with severe back pain in recent days.
His death was announced by the Philadelphia Flyers along with the Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education group.
He is survived by his wife, Gini Gramaglia, whom he married in July 2016. From a previous marriage to his first wife, Carol, he had three children — one daughter and two sons.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Parent made his NHL debut in the mid-1960s, beginning his career with the Boston Bruins before being selected by the Philadelphia Flyers. He also played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and once in the World Hockey Association with the Philadelphia Blazers. As a Flyer, he became known for his remarkable skill, consistency, and clutch performances.
His achievements are among the greatest for any goaltender. He led the Flyers to back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 1974 and 1975, and in each of those years won the Vezina Trophy (best NHL goaltender) and the Conn Smythe Trophy (playoff MVP). He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984, and his No. 1 jersey was retired by the Flyers in 1979.
