Acclaimed Austrian actor Johannes Krisch has died at the age of 59 in Vienna after a prolonged battle with cancer. His death was announced on July 27, 2026, by the Theater in der Josefstadt, where he had been a member of the ensemble since 2019. Krisch had reportedly been dealing with serious health problems for some time before his passing.
Johannes Krisch was regarded as one of Austria’s finest character actors, with a career spanning nearly four decades across theatre, film, and television. A longtime member of Vienna’s prestigious Burgtheater before joining the Theater in der Josefstadt, he earned international recognition for his lead performance in the Oscar-nominated 2008 film “Revanche.”
He was also widely known for his roles in the hit television series “Braunschlag”, several episodes of “Tatort,” and films such as “Märzengrund” (2022), “A Cure for Wellness” (2016), and “The Phoenician Scheme” (2025). His powerful stage performances and deeply authentic acting made him one of the most respected performers of his generation.
Johannes Krisch is survived by his wife, actress Larissa Fuchs, and their five children. Family, friends, and colleagues have paid tribute to his remarkable talent, humanity, and lasting contribution to Austrian theatre and cinema.
