His death was confirmed by family members and acknowledged by several academic and Muslim organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
John L. Esposito was one of the world’s leading experts on Islam and Muslim-West relations. He served as a University Professor at Georgetown University and founded the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, an institution dedicated to promoting dialogue between faiths and improving understanding of Islam.
Over a distinguished academic career spanning more than five decades, Esposito authored or edited more than 50 books, many of which became standard references in Islamic studies. His most influential works include Islam: The Straight Path, The Islamic Threat: Myth or Reality?, The Future of Islam, and What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam.
