President Russell M. Nelson, the 17th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at his home in Salt Lake City. He was 101 years old.
The Church officially announced his passing in a statement: “President Nelson devoted his life to serving God and His children. His leadership and dedication have left an enduring legacy for the global Church community.”
A post published in Russell M. Nelson’s Instagram account, “As one of the special witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world, I testify that He is the Son of the living God. Jesus is the Christ—our atoning Savior and Redeemer. This is His Church, restored to bless God’s children and to prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord.” —Russell M. Nelson (1924–2025).”
He is survived by his second wife, Wendy Watson Nelson; eight of his ten children; and more than 200 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Before becoming a religious leader, Nelson was a renowned heart surgeon. He joined the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1984 and became Church president in January 2018, following the death of President Thomas S. Monson. During his presidency, Nelson led the Church through major global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic. He also spearheaded initiatives to modernize Church practices, emphasized the use of the Church’s full name, and announced plans for the construction of 200 new temples worldwide.
