Mike Greenwell, the longtime Boston Red Sox outfielder and two-time All-Star, passed away on 9 October 2025 at the age of 62 after a battle with medullary thyroid cancer. His wife, Tracy Greenwell, confirmed his death, sharing that he passed at 10:30 a.m. at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
“With a heavy heart, I lost my best friend today,” Tracy Greenwell said, “It was Mike’s time to be an angel. At 10:30 a.m. in Boston’s General Hospital. We are forever grateful for the life he has given us.”
Red Sox wrote on X, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Red Sox Hall of Famer Mike Greenwell.
“The Gator” spent his entire career in a Red Sox uniform and was a beloved fixture of Fenway and Fort Myers. He gave so much to Lee County and Sox Nation.”
Lee County Government wrote on Facebook, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Commissioner Mike Greenwell, a lifelong Lee County resident. He was a strong advocate for the people and businesses of Lee County and will be remembered for seeking meaningful solutions to the challenges his community faced.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who were touched by his leadership.”
Mike and Tracy were married on February 18, 1984, and shared a life together spanning over four decades. The couple had two sons: Bo, who played in the minor leagues, and Garrett, a former college baseball player. Tracy, a dedicated nurse, stood by Mike throughout his illness, providing unwavering care and support during his final days.
Greenwell spent his entire 12-season MLB career with the Red Sox, from 1985 to 1996, and was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2008. Known for finishing second in the 1988 American League MVP voting, Greenwell was beloved by teammates and fans alike.
Beyond his baseball career, Greenwell served as a Lee County Commissioner in Florida, operated local businesses, and remained an active community figure. His legacy extends beyond sports, as his family continues to honor his contributions both on and off the field.
