Tom Edwards, a prominent figure in British broadcasting, has passed away at the age of 80.
Broadcasting & media production company Scruton Wyatt Media announced his death on Facebook on 25 October 2025, “So sad to hear the news earlier that Tom Edwards passed away this evening.”
“A true professional. Sadly Tom was too poorly for us to visit him in Lincoln on Thursday as planned but we had a lovely long conversation with him and shared a laugh as always. A special guy xx.”
He was a radio presenter and television announcer
Born on March 20, 1945, in Norwich, England, Edwards began his career in the 1960s as a journalist for the Eastern Evening News before transitioning into broadcasting.
He gained recognition as a presenter on the Border Television music programme Beat in the Border and later as a Pontins Bluecoat. Between 1965 and 1967, he worked for offshore pirate radio stations Radio City and Radio Caroline, where he became the station’s chief disc jockey. In late 1967, Edwards joined the BBC, working as a TV newsreader and presenter on BBC Look East.
He also served as a staff announcer and newsreader on both BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2, presenting a number of shows during the 1970s. Edwards later worked as an announcer for various TV stations, including Thames Television, ATV, and HTV West. In the 1990s, he returned to his hometown of Norwich and worked on BBC Radio Norfolk.
Edwards was known for his distinctive voice and charismatic presence, which endeared him to audiences across the UK. His contributions to both radio and television have left an indelible mark on the industry. He is survived by his family, who have expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans and colleagues during this difficult time.
