Former NFL wide receiver Randall “Randy” William Burke passed away overnight on November 18, 2025, at the age of 70. The news was confirmed by WKYT, the Lexington television station where he worked for nearly three decades after retiring from football. His death has left former teammates, fans, and colleagues mourning the loss of a respected athlete and community figure.
Burke’s journey began in Miami, Florida, where he was born on May 26, 1955, and attended Southwest Miami Senior High School. He later earned a scholarship to the University of Kentucky, becoming a key part of the Wildcats football program from 1973 to 1977. His college career paved the way for his selection in the first round of the 1977 NFL Draft, where he was picked 26th overall by the Baltimore Colts. Though his rookie year was affected by injury, he went on to play five seasons with the Colts, with 1980 marking his strongest performance—recording 14 receptions for 185 yards and three touchdowns. He later briefly joined the Los Angeles Raiders’ training camp and played a game for the Washington Federals in the USFL.
After stepping away from professional football, Burke built a second successful career. He became a senior marketing consultant at WKYT in Lexington, Kentucky, where he served for 29 years before retiring in 2017. Colleagues remember him as warm, dedicated, and deeply respected within the station and the broader community. His transition from the field to the media world highlighted his versatility and the lasting relationships he formed over the years.
