Retired NASCAR star Gregory Jack “Greg” Biffle, 55, has died in a devastating plane crash in Statesville, North Carolina, on December 18, 2025, when his private Cessna 550 business jet crashed shortly after takeoff and burst into flames. The crash claimed the lives of all seven people aboard, including Biffle, his wife Cristina Grossu Biffle, and their two children, 14-year-old daughter Emma and 5-year-old son Ryder. Also killed were pilot Dennis Dutton, his son Jack Dutton, and family friend Craig Wadsworth. Authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
Greg Biffle was one of NASCAR’s most respected competitors, best known for his long career with Roush Fenway Racing and remarkable versatility across all three of NASCAR’s national series. Biffle began racing on local tracks in the Pacific Northwest before breaking into national prominence in the late 1990s. He won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship in 2000, followed by the NASCAR Busch (now Xfinity) Series title in 2002, becoming the first driver to win championships in both of those series. Over a career spanning more than two decades, Biffle recorded 56 victories across NASCAR’s national divisions, including 19 Cup Series wins, and was later named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers during the sport’s anniversary celebrations. After stepping back from full-time competition in 2016, he continued to make occasional starts and remained involved in motorsports and community efforts. Beyond the track, Biffle earned admiration for his humanitarian work, flying helicopters to deliver supplies and aid during Hurricane Helene relief efforts in 2024, an effort for which he was honored with the Myers Brothers Award.
Biffle is survived by his extended family and the widespread NASCAR community that mourns his sudden loss. Statements from the Biffle and related families described Greg and Cristina as “devoted parents and active philanthropists,” emphasizing that their lives were deeply rooted in love for their children, Emma and Ryder, and service to others. Tributes from fellow drivers, fans, and public figures highlighted not only his competitive achievements but also his character off the racetrack.
