James Ransone, the American actor known for his memorable performances in The Wire, It: Chapter Two, The Black Phone and numerous other film and television roles, has died at the age of 46. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office, Ransone passed away on December 19, 2025, in Los Angeles; the cause of death was ruled a suicide by hanging. Authorities say no foul play was suspected in the investigation.

Ransone built a respected career over more than two decades in Hollywood. Born James Finley Ransone III on June 2, 1979, in Baltimore, Maryland, he first gained wide recognition for his portrayal of Ziggy Sobotka in the second season of HBO’s critically acclaimed crime drama The Wire. He went on to appear in the war miniseries Generation Kill, starred in horror films like Sinister and Sinister 2, and brought the adult version of Eddie Kaspbrak to life in It: Chapter Two. His credits also include Tangerine and The Black Phone and its sequel, among other television appearances.
He is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and their two children, Jack and Violet.
On 3 June 2024, she wrote on Instagram, “15 years ago, late to a birthday dinner at lil frankies, I gave this man a pineapple from a deli with receipt tape as a present that said – “good for one beach vacation anywhere, anytime.” I never expected he’d cash it in so many times.
