Renowned Soviet and Russian actress Vera Valentinovna Alentova has died at the age of 83. According to the Pushkin Drama Theatre, she fell ill during a farewell ceremony for her colleague Anatoly Lobotsky at the Mayakovsky Theatre in Moscow on December 25, 2025, and was taken to hospital, where she later passed away. The official announcements confirmed her death but did not immediately disclose a detailed medical cause.
Alentova was one of the most celebrated performers in Soviet and Russian cinema and theatre with a career spanning over six decades. She gained international fame for her role as Katerina Tikhonova in the 1979 film Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1981. Throughout her life, Alentova appeared in numerous films and stage productions, including Tomorrow Was the War, Shirli-Myrli, and The Envy of Gods, and was honored as a People’s Artist of Russia.
She graduated from the Moscow Art Theatre School in 1965 and devoted much of her career to the Pushkin Theatre, where she served for more than 60 years.
Vera Alentova is survived by her daughter, Yulia Menshova, who is also an actress and television presenter. She was married for 48 years to director and actor Vladimir Menshov, who died in 2021. Her passing marks the end of an era in Russian performing arts, with colleagues and fans around the world mourning the loss of a beloved cultural icon.
