Fernando emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young cricket talents. Born on 11 March 1991 in Panadura, he was a right-handed batsman and right-arm off-break bowler who represented Sri Lanka in various youth and domestic competitions.
He made his mark in the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, where he top-scored for Sri Lanka with 52 runs in their semi-final against Australia. At school, he starred for St. Peter’s College, Colombo, captaining multiple age-group teams and later playing club cricket for Colts Sports Club, Panadura Sports Club, Chilaw Marians and Ragama Sports Club. Just weeks before his accident, Fernando scored an unbeaten 102 in a club match, reflecting the calibre of player he had become before tragedy struck.
He is survived by his grieving family, who stood by him throughout his long period of critical care and fought tirelessly to support his treatment. Tributes from the cricket community have highlighted not only his talent on the field but also his warm personality and the spirit he showed in the face of adversity.
