Isiah Whitlock Jr., the acclaimed American actor best known for his unforgettable turn as State Senator Clay Davis on HBO’s The Wire, has died at the age of 71. His manager, Brian Liebman, confirmed that Whitlock passed away on December 30, 2025, in New York after a short illness. Liebman described him as “a brilliant actor and an even better person,” and said that his loss will be deeply felt by those who knew and loved him.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Whitlock became one of Hollywood’s most respected character actors. Born on September 13, 1954, in South Bend, Indiana, he originally attended Southwest Minnesota State University on a football scholarship before injuries pushed him toward acting, later training at the American Conservatory Theater.
Whitlock’s breakthrough came with The Wire, where his portrayal of the corrupt but charismatic Clay Davis became iconic, partly due to the character’s long-drawn catchphrase that entered pop culture. Beyond The Wire, he collaborated frequently with director Spike Lee, appearing in films such as 25th Hour, BlacKkKlansman, Chi-Raq and Da 5 Bloods.
He also had notable roles on television in Veep, Your Honor, The Residence and classic series like Law & Order. His film credits included Goodfellas, Pieces of April, Enchanted, Cars 3 and Lightyear. At the time of his death, he had completed work on projects including the indie film The Body Is Water and the animated Hoppers (2026).
Whitlock is survived by his wife, CoCo Carmel Whitlock, and his children Ashley Brown, Beau Whitlock, and Tim Whitlock Kelly, as well as his sister Debbie Wade. His legacy as a versatile, memorable performer and beloved figure in the entertainment community will continue to resonate with fans and colleagues alike.
