Giorgos Papadakis, one of Greece’s most beloved and influential journalists, has died at the age of 74. He suffered a sudden and severe heart attack on the afternoon of Sunday, January 4, 2026, while in the Kolonaki district of Athens. Emergency services rushed him to Laiko General Hospital in critical condition, but despite prolonged efforts to resuscitate him, doctors were unable to save his life.
Papadakis’s career in journalism spanned more than three decades and left a lasting mark on Greek media. Born on February 4, 1951, in the Athens suburb of Chalandri, he began as a print and radio journalist before transitioning to television in the 1980s with the ERT program Treis ston Aera (“Three on the Air”).
He became a household name as the host of ANT1’s morning news program Kalimera Ellada (“Good Morning Greece”), which he anchored from 1992 until his emotional final broadcast on July 4, 2025. His presence helped shape the format of morning news in Greece, earning him the reputation of a defining voice in Greek broadcast journalism. Even after stepping down from daily hosting duties, he continued contributing as a commentator on ANT1’s main news bulletins.
Giorgos Papadakis is survived by his wife, Tina Papadeli, and their two sons, Iasonas and Phoivos. He also had another son, Konstantis, from a previous marriage, and was a grandfather. His family, colleagues, and viewers across Greece are mourning the loss of a figure who became synonymous with morning television and trusted news delivery for generations.
