In a heartbreaking incident that has shaken the motorsport world, Finnish driver Juha Miettinen lost his life following a devastating seven-car crash during a race in Germany on Saturday.
The accident occurred during the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) event, held at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, a circuit infamous for its extreme difficulty and danger. Miettinen, aged 66, was driving a BMW 325i when the collision happened in the early stages of the qualifying session.
Despite immediate medical attention, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the track’s medical centre.
The crash involved seven cars and prompted race control to immediately halt the session. According to officials from the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers, emergency teams were deployed quickly to carry out rescue operations.
Six other drivers involved in the crash were transported to medical facilities for precautionary checks. Fortunately, none were reported to have life-threatening injuries.
Among those caught in the incident was four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, who escaped unharmed.
The tragedy led to the suspension of the race for the remainder of the day. Organisers later confirmed that a minute’s silence would be observed before Sunday’s race in honor of Miettinen.
Tributes poured in from across the motorsport world. BMW Motorsport expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident “heartbreaking” and mourning the loss of “a member of the BMW racing family.”
Verstappen also shared his condolences on social media, writing that he was “shocked” by the tragic events.
In a chilling coincidence, just hours before the race, Miettinen had posted on social media expressing his excitement for the event, writing about experiencing the thrill of the Nürburgring’s iconic endurance race atmosphere.
The Nürburgring Nordschleife, stretching nearly 13 miles through dense forest with over 150 corners, is widely regarded as one of the most unforgiving circuits in motorsport history. Its dangers are well documented, including the near-fatal crash of Niki Lauda during the 1976 German Grand Prix—an incident that led to Formula One abandoning the track.
this is really heartbreaking news. a reminder of how dangerous this sport can be no matter how many safety measures are in place, there’s always real risk every time they go out on track.
rest in peace juha miettinen and my thoughts are with his family and loved ones.. hoping… https://t.co/ly4V1YyyYa
