Australian musician and songwriter, James Baker passed away on 5 May 2025 at the age of 71 due to liver cancer, he had been battling since 2015. Initially doctors said that James Baker would live for six months but he fought cancer almost 10 years and in this time he performed live shows and created several music.
James Baker’s age was 71 year old when he passed away. He lived his life with fully enjoyable. He was known as drummer and worked for the Victims, the Scientists, Hoodoo Gurus, Beasts of Bourbon, and the Dubrovniks. His full birth name was James Lawrence Baker who was born on 7 March 1954 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. His childhood spent with his family in Fremantle, Western Australia. His father was a player who played for East Fremantle Football Club.
James Baker’s career began as drummer in Black Sun, initially he worked for Black Sun band in 1974 to 1975. He met Joe Strummer and Mick Jones in pub. In 1977, he was a member of protopunk band. In this time, he worked with Ross Buncle, Rudolph V and Lloyd. He wrote a first single with Australian rock musician Dave Faulkner, released on 1977 named Television Addict, became popular and appeared several punk compilations.
He joined another punk rock band ( The Scientists ) as drummer in May 1978 with Kim Leith Salmon and Rodney John “Roddy” Radalj and Boris Sujdovic. This band released first single Frantic Romantic in April 1979. He also appeared in ABC-TV’s pop music show, Countdown. He joined in Beasts of Bourbon in September 1983. He worked with various bands including Black Sun ( from 1973 to l1974), The Slick City Boys ( from 1974 to 1975), The Geeks (1977), The Scientists (from 1978 to 1982, from 1988 to 1990 and 1995), The Hoodoo Gurus (1983), The Beasts of Bourbon (from 1983 to 1985 and from 1988 to 1990), The James Baker Experience (from 1985 to 1986), The Eternal Teenagers (1986), Legendary Stardust Cowboys (1986), The Adorable Ones/The Dubrovniks ( from 1986 to 1994), Novakill (1998), Rockin’ Hendy ( 2000 ) and The Painkillers (2005 ). He received Hall of Fame award in 2006.
James Baker’s wife is Cathy and they have two daughters named Lorna and Faye. His sister is Barbara.
