The Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29 on Monday.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by the Memphis Grizzlies and Clarke’s agency on Tuesday.
The Grizzlies said in a statement, “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke. Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Priority Sports agency shared Tuesday on social media, “We are beyond devastated by the passing of Brandon Clarke.”
Agency added, “He was so loved by all of us here, and everyone whose life he touched. He was the gentlest soul who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family. Our hearts are so broken as we think about his mom, Whitney, his entire family, and all of his friends and teammates. From high school to San Jose State to Gonzaga to the Grizzlies, Brandon impacted everyone everyone who was part of his life.”
The statement continued, “The Everyone loved BC,” Clarke’s agency said, “because he was always there as the most supportive friend you could ever imagine. He was so unique in the joy he brought to all of those in his life. It’s just impossible to put into words how much he’ll be missed. We love you, BC.”
Brandon Clarke built a respected basketball career through his athleticism, energy, and defensive skills. After starring at Gonzaga University during the 2018–19 college basketball season, he was selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft and joined the Memphis Grizzlies.
Clarke made an immediate impact in the NBA, winning the 2019 NBA Summer League MVP award and later earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2020 after averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in his rookie season.
Known for his hustle and efficient scoring, he became an important part of Memphis’ young core alongside Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., helping the team become a regular playoff contender.
One of the biggest moments of his career came during the 2022 NBA Playoffs when he recorded a dominant 21-point, 15-rebound performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves. In 2022, the Grizzlies rewarded him with a four-year, $52 million contract extension, recognizing his value to the franchise.
